Data Versus Information

Linguistically, information and data are synonyms, but there is an important distinction when applying those terms to information systems. Data are facts or figures in raw form but information is data presented in a form that is useful in a decision making activity. In this day and age, to be an accountant, analyst or manager that stands above the rest, I think you really need to know how to take data and make it meaningful. You need to be able to take the raw data that is provided by the system, and understand what it does and doesn’t represent, where it comes from, how it flows into the system, and how to manage and manipulate it so that you can create it into something useful. In my day job accounting for compensation related awards, my team is very reliant on the data we receive from individuals and databases, and more often than not we need to get that data into a form that will allow us to determine how much we need to accrue each month by adding data points, creating calculations and analyzing the results. I like to think that there aren’t many people with the proficient data management and transformation skills to be able to work on a team that frequently needs to take raw data and adeptly create useful information, but I think anyone who has those skill sets can easily work in any other type of accounting role and excel much more easily than those who have not mastered that ability.  -1/19/2020
